Traffic Laws You Didn't Know You Were Breaking!

As drivers in Virginia there are always new laws that are implemented on our roadways, that quite frankly, we have no clue about! Everyday most of us are breaking some traffic law, such as the Move Over Law (You are supposed to move a lane over when passing a state trooper or law enforcement officer pulled over with its lights flashing and any other emergency vehicle with their lights flashing). As a witness, I got out to make sure everyone was okay and miraculously the young lady in the vehicle that flipped over on its hood was okay but she was hysterical (think her license was suspended). The other young lady who was on her cellphone, that caused the collision was okay, as well. I actually asked her, "What were you thinking? The collision was totally avoidable!

Other laws you didn't know you were breaking are as follows: stopping at a light in the pedestrian crosswalk, or leading a light and it turns red before you make your left turn, driving through a business parking lot to avoid a red light, failure to signal when moving from a curb, failure to stop for a person with a white can (they are usually blind or visually impaired), driving while using earphones/headphones, driving too slow and you are impeding traffic, driving over a firehose, failure to dim headlights, and if you hit a pedestrian; no matter what happened you could be held liable (must be able to prove you had no way to avoid the pedestrian) and the list goes on and on. Wow, there are countless laws that we have to keep adapting to because of our changing roadways, vehicle and traffic technology. This is the kicker, most of us have no idea we are even breaking a traffic law! Ignorance of the law is no excuse but transparency of the laws need to be a main driver education goal! At the end of the day everyone's main goal is to get to home safely!
